2023 was a big year! Below is a recap of Disability & Well-Being In Social Work projects in 2023.
1. Formation
Disability and Well-Being In Social Work was first formed in the Spring of 2023 out of conversations happening on the NASW forums around NASW's need for a committee focused on disability priorities.
2. Campaign for NASW Committee
The first main project was organizing support for NASW to create a National Committee on Disability. A 10 page letter of support was written, community members were surveyed for feedback and the information was presented at the June 2023 NASW Board Meeting. Social media graphics and other content was also created to spread awareness. Learn more about this campaign.
What's next: Though NASW has put the proposal for creating a National Committee on Disability on hold until after January 2025, the Disability & Well-Being In Social Work group has continued to expand its reach and impact in other ways.
3. Monthly Events
As the group began to grow, DWSW started hosting monthly virtual events for the community to connect. The first was in October 2023. Learn more about monthly events.
4. Scholarship
In November 2023, the Disability in Social Work Scholarship was created. By December, two $500 scholarships were fully funded thanks to generous donors. Applications for the 2024 scholarship will open in March and be awarded in July. Learn more about the scholarship.
